Meet Wu Yee’s new Board President, Michelle Droz, and learn what inspires her deep commitment to investing in young children and families.
What inspired you to become involved with Wu Yee Children’s Services?
In 2020, I was looking for an organization where I could volunteer virtually and support youths, as this has always been the age group I’ve been most passionate about serving. When I discovered Wu Yee, I learned about the profound impact that a lack of access to early childhood education can have on children and what Wu Yee has provided to families. Research shows that without a strong early learning foundation, children are more likely to face educational challenges that can persist throughout their lives.
My inspiration is simple: if you’re looking to make an investment with one of the greatest long-term returns, invest early. Supporting children during their earliest years creates opportunities that last a lifetime. When a community invests in its youngest members, everyone benefits.
As Wu Yee’s new Board President, what excites you most about this next chapter?
What excites me most about Wu Yee is its leadership, staff, and Board of Directors. The organization has a wonderful balance of new perspectives and long-tenured team members whose experience and commitment have helped shape its mission. As we approach Wu Yee’s 50th anniversary, there is a shared sense of excitement and pride in celebrating five decades of serving hundreds of children and families. That enthusiasm is contagious and inspires everyone to continue building on the organization’s legacy.
Why do you believe investing in young children and families is so important?
I am living proof that championing young children changes lives. As an orphan from South Korea, I know that compassionate volunteers dedicated their time and care to nurturing babies and young children like me. After I was adopted, I grew up with a deep sense of gratitude and a desire to give back to the opportunities that had been given to me. Supporting young children isn’t just something I believe in; it’s a way of honoring the people whose kindness helped shape my own future. Every child deserves access to high-quality early childhood education regardless of where they are born or their family’s circumstances.
Why do you personally choose to support Wu Yee as a donor?
As mentioned, investing in infants and toddlers is empowering our youth and, ultimately, strengthens the well-being of our entire community. Wu Yee is one of the longest-standing organizations dedicated to its mission, and its commitment has remained steadfast over the years. Every person who works at or alongside Wu Yee leads with compassion and a genuine desire to make a difference. I am proud to be part of an organization that puts children and families at the heart of everything it does.
