AHEAD Funding for Family Child Care Educators

Thank you Liz Winograd and the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco

We’re pleased to share that Wu Yee Children’s Services received a 2021 AHEAD Grant from the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco. AHEAD grants, which are made through the Bank’s member financial institutions, will be used by nonprofit organizations in Arizona, California, and Nevada to foster economic development and promote community stability and self-sufficiency. Special thanks to Liz Winograd of the Low Income Investment Fund (LIIF) for sponsoring our application for Business Management Supports to Family Child Care Educators.

The entrepreneurial/microenterprise grant will provide technical assistance to help low-to-moderate income women of color operate successful family child care businesses, increasing the availability of affordable and accessible childcare options.

Valuing the importance of culturally competent child care to raise healthy children, Wu Yee’s Family Child Care (FCC) Educator Training program has helped community members become small business owners of quality child care businesses since 1999, averaging 15 new businesses each year, creating over 300 FCC small businesses and 2,400 quality child care spaces for children across San Francisco. In the 2020-2021 program year, our program helped 20 providers open their FCC businesses, 8 providers relocate, and 4 providers to expand their business from a small to large license, resulting in an increase of 184 new child care slots in San Francisco.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the program has helped educators navigate additional challenges, including distributing PPE and assisting educators understand and adapt to new regulations and requirements.

Thank you Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco and Low Income Investment Fund for helping our community!
