Tinkering with Ramps and Rollers

Hands on exploration and education with the STEAM Starters project

STEAM Starters

Joanne Lee-Yuen, Preschool Lead Teacher at our Generations Early Learning Center, participated in the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) Starters project at the Exploratorium’s Tinkering Studio, a project funded by the California Department of Education.

Casey Federico, consultant and trainer to preschool programs and the Tinkering Studio at the Exploratorium says “Joanne was fundamental to our work, bringing so much insight and brilliance to our work together. Her gift for documentation and helping children form their own questions taught us all so much!”

What is Tinkering?

Tinkering is a hands-on learning process and the STEAM Starters project explored how early childhood educators and young children tinker. Joanne was part of weekly meetings with educators around the state, exploring purposeful play, exploration, learner choice, and collaboration. “Ramps and Rollers” was the theme of Joanne’s work, and her class at Generations researched ramps, how things roll, and created their own rollers. Joanne also engaged Generations family and community in documenting and sharing about ramps in their homes and the neighborhood.

Tinkering Together

Joanne was a featured contributor in the Tinkering Together festival March 4-5, 2022. Check out the recording, and a wonderful interview with Teacher Joanne: https://tinkeringtogether.org/joanne-lee-yuen/
